First-class dance is an enormously powerful art form. Ask ten different people who have seen the same performance, and you get ten different interpretations. Movement is a very important element in human nature, and Stockholm 59° North’s ambition is to hit precisely the right creative spot that moves the audience.

We are a group of dancers from the Royal Swedish Ballet who are touring in Sweden and abroad, mainly with new creations from Swedish choreographers.

The Royal Court Dancer Madeleine Onne formed the group in 1997. In August of the same year we started with a weeklong appearance at the renowned Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival in the US, and were surprised by the massive response from both spectators and the international press, among others the New York Times. This success gave the group tremendous encouragement to continue dancing in front of new and enthusiastic audiences. In 2001 Johannes Öhman was appointed Artistic Director of the company and continued so until 2007.

Choreography in Sweden differs in its sincerity and shape from other contemporary dance in Europe right now. There is a tradition of young choreographers who have followed in the footsteps of Mats Ek: Örjan Andersson, Kenneth Kvarnström, Jens Östberg, to name a few with whom we have successful collaborations.

Furthermore, we add flavour with world-famous choreographers such as William Forsythe, Ulysses Dove and Mats Ek.

Deeply rooted in a centuries-old classical tradition, Stockholm 59° North has given us the opportunity to create a brave new repertoire. At the same time new options have opened up for choreographers to meet the dancers in a more simple and direct manner, compared with that of an institutional theatre.

Because everyone is involved, we feel a great affinity with and understanding of all the work that lies behind every project. That insight develops the dancers and strengthens the performance on stage.

Stockholm 59° North was formed out of the desire to present our own repertoire. Now we feel we have come well on the way to realising that ambition.

Every year Stockholm 59° North presents at least one production at Confidencen, the Royal Court Theatre at Ulriksdal, superbly situated just outside Stockholm city. This is Sweden’s oldest Rococo theatre, built in 1753. Here the Swedish King Gustaf III took his first steps towards the art of theatre. During the summer season, Confidencen has a wide repertoire of theatre, opera and dance, an equivalent to Glyndebourne in England. Confidencen is also the residence of Stockholm 59° North.

Confidencen

The Royal Swedish Ballet has its base at the Royal Swedish Opera House in Stockholm. The first performance was as early as in 1773, which makes the Royal Swedish Ballet one of the oldest ballet companies in the world. The Royal Swedish Ballet is considered one of Europe’s leading ballet companies, of classical ballet as well as modern dance. The company has a solid reputation for its high standard regarding both artistic and technical skills. The dancers are all part of the historical link that goes back to the days in the 18th century when the Swedish King Gustaf III founded the Royal Swedish Opera House. The present-day Opera House was built in 1898 and holds 1,200 spectators.
